Dialogues with History: Communities at a Crossroads, Exploring Día de los Muertos

Join a discussion of the evolving representation of Día de los Muertos in American society. Dr. Valerie Martínez of Our Lady of the Lake University will share the history of Día de los Muertos and modern-day commemorations among Latinx populations. Participants will have the opportunity to apply the historical learning and context shared by Dr. Martínez as they engage in small group dialogue about the history of Día de los Muertos and the Latinx experience in the United States.

This event aims to:

  • highlight the importance of history to the understanding of contemporary events
  • foster facilitated dialogue between experts, students, and community members
  • break down barriers between experts, students, and community members
  • facilitate people listening to experiences that are not their own

Participants will make progress towards:

  • exploring the intersection of cultural celebration and cultural identity
  • reflecting on the importance of Día de los Muertos within the Mexican diaspora as it is linked to the changing demographics of VA
  • reflecting on their own contributions to supporting a more inclusive environment
