“It’s in the syllabus”: Engaging students with accessible syllabi

Instructor

Dr. Dayna Henry (CHBS, Research & Scholarship, and Libraries), Dr. Chelsey Bollinger (COE and Libraries), Sammy Joy Whitaker (CVPA and Libraries)

Description

How many times have you said or emailed a student with information found in your course syllabus? How do we get students to read and check the syllabus for our courses? This interactive workshop reviews methods for setting up accessible syllabi and other ideas to invite students to engage with your syllabus. Expanding upon the syllabus module found in the LAUD canvas training site, attendees will be provided with templates, activity ideas, and working time (with guide and assistance) to bring to their courses.

This is part of the College of Health & Behavioral Studies (CHBS) Inclusive Excellence Professional Learning Community (PLC) events, in collaboration with JMU Libraries, open to all JMU faculty and staff.

Information for JMU users’ self-signup to the self-paced Canvas site: https://canvas.jmu.edu/enroll/FL49JT [sign into this URL with your @jmu.edu credentials and DUO, then "enroll in the course".]

Objectives

Participants will

  • Develop an appreciation of a variety of ways to engage students with syllabus review at the beginning of a semester.
  • Develop a compact version of the syllabus with core facts and factors from the more comprehensive version of the syllabus.
  • Develop multiple presentations and organize syllabi information to make them more accessible to students.
