This will be a two-day, hands-on workshop exploring the QGIS open source GIS package. Topics covered in the workshop will include an overall introduction to the “OSGEO Stack” of open source GIS tools, including QGIS, SAGA, GRASS, ORFEO, GDAL, R and other tools that all are included in QGIS. We will mostly explore the free QGIS software, which can run on Windows, Mac or Linux environments and runs in over 40 languages. QGIS includes vector, raster, georegistration, 3-D viewing, analysis, map generation, and other capabilities, all using ESRI shapefiles and geodatabases as the basic vector data structure and Geotiffs as the basic raster data structure.

The first workshop day will begin with a general introduction to Open Source GIS in general, including the differences with commercial software. We will then begin to explore the QGIS user interface and will discover the various basic functions, including the loading of vector and raster data using several different datasets which are provided as part of the workshop. We will then explore various QGIS interface options, including the many QGIS plugins, and live linking OpenStreetMaps, Google, and Bing maps and satellite and other background images.

On the second day, we will continue the introduction to the QGIS software, creating cartographic maps using the composer cartographic interface, working with vector attribute tables, and downloading and working with raster satellite imagery, aerial photos and historical maps. QGIS and other Open Source GIS web resources will be explored, as these are the primary user community interface with the QGIS development and support community. Then we will cover the GRASS, ORFEO, GDAL, and SAGA Open Source packages, which are included in the QGIS download and can be used as a set of integrated tools in the QGIS environment. GRASS is the original open source GIS package, and is a very powerful and integrated GIS, image processing, spatial analysis, visualization and modeling environment. We will use GRASS within the QGIS environment, where data can be used as GRASS files in the same environment as QGIS shapefiles, and can be converted easily between the two. The current QGIS software can now access all of the GRASS functions (over 400) remotely and does raster and vector data format conversions on the fly.

Participants should bring a laptop with the software already installed if possible. Download QGIS (www.qgis.org) before the workshop (QGIS includes a current version of GRASS). Your instructor can assist you before the class if you have trouble, but it is quite simple.
