Description

Part of The Digital Scholarship Series

In this session a JMU Justice Studies professor, in conjunction with the JMU Libraries’ Copyright Coordinator, will seek to show participants how lawful use of copyrighted material can lead to students creating exciting, non-traditional scholarship in the form of digital assignments. The workshop will focus on the responsible use of other people’s intellectual property on the wider web, as opposed to simply connecting students to copyrighted material through Canvas. A primary legal mechanism to be discussed in the session is transformative Fair Use. The presenters’ aim is that participants will leave the workshop with ideas for creating assignments for their own classes in which students can use copyrighted work without infringing upon those copyrights.

Objectives

  • Create familiarity with relevant copyright laws and IP issues.
  • Demonstrate how lawful and responsible use of copyrighted material can enable innovative digital assignments, pedagogy, and scholarship.
  • Develop ideas for modifying your scholarly agenda to conform with copyright rules.

The Digital Scholarship Series

This is an introductory series that will introduce faculty and graduate students to the theories and practices of digital scholarship, promote a community of digital scholars and explore the relationship between digital scholarship, digital pedagogy, and scholarly communication.

Other workshops in the series: (Each workshop is a stand-alone session. Choose sessions that suit your interest and needs.)
