Crafting Effective Data Management Plans

In this workshop designed for researchers at JMU, you will learn how to design an effective Data Management Plan (DMP), align you work with grant agency expectations, and leverage best practices and tools like the DMPTool. Whether you’re writing a DMP for the first time or refining an existing one, this session will provide practical guidance and hands-on experience.

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Explain the purpose and value of a Data Management Plan (DMP) in the research lifecycle.
  • Identify key components of a strong DMP and common expectations from major funders.
  • Use DMPTool and other data management tools to draft or refine a DMP aligned with funder guidelines.
  • Apply best practices for data documentation, organization, and long-term preservation.
  • Assess how DMPs can support responsible data sharing, sustainability, and research integrity.
