AI Summer Bootcamp: Getting Started

Join this new workshop to explore the complex and ever-changing world of artificial intelligence (AI). Gain a thorough understanding of AI, from its origins to its current impact across various industries. Learn about the different types of AI, with a focus on generative AI (gAI), and explore how machine learning (ML) powers AI. This session will cover ethical considerations, showcase various AI tools like ChatGPT and DALL-E, and explore AI's practical integration into tools used at JMU, such as Copilot and Gradescope. This will give you hands-on experience with real-world AI applications, including those at JMU. This workshop is ideal for AI newcomers and early adopters, featuring informative lectures, interactive discussions, and a showcase of AI tools to ensure active participation.

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Describe the origins and key milestones in AI development.

  • Explain generative AI (gAI), its techniques, and its impact on content creation.

  • Discuss the ethical implications of AI in areas such as information sourcing, image creation, authorship, and algorithmic bias.

  • Confidently explore generative and non-generative-AI tools.

  • Discuss the implications of AI on industry practices and future technological developments.
