Designing an Accessible Syllabus for Inclusive Learning

Access to your class syllabus is vital for the success of an ever-evolving diverse population of JMU students. The course syllabus provides a semester roadmap for students and serves as a crucial learning guide both inside and outside of the classroom. In this session, JMU faculty are invited to take an approach based on universal design for learning (UDL) to explore the multiple paths of representation for an inclusive and accessible syllabus. After taking this workshop, you can also request follow-up consultation, co-design, or co-development services to prepare your courses for summer sessions.

Taking this workshop will allow you to:

  • Develop appreciation of an accessible syllabus
  • Identify design features that enable inclusive access of a course syllabus in digital format
  • Evaluate alternative ways of presenting your syllabus to students for inclusive access
  • Discuss possible language and directions for responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) to be included in your yllabus
