The 2018 JMU VR Video Essay Showcase will feature eight original works by JMU undergraduates exploring the aesthetic, psychological, philosophical, and sociopolitical implications of virtual reality (VR) as an emerging new medium. This video showcase is the culmination of a semester-long upper division English class (ENG420), entitled “Advanced Studies in Film and Media Theory” and taught by Dr. Dennis Lo. Using original footage captured with GoPro Fusion cameras supplied by JMU Libraries & Educational Technologies, students will present their virtual reality video essays on topics ranging from the impact of VR on social and psychological well-being, to new frontiers in avant-garde cinema, and emerging issues of agency, race, and phenomenology in new medias. All JMU students, staff, and faculty are welcome to attend.
