Dr. Deborah Whaley, Professor of American Studies from the University of Iowa and author of Black Women in Sequence: Re-Inking Comics, Graphic Novels, and Anime (U of Washington Press, 2016), will be leading a workshop for faculty and graduate students interested in teaching with comic books, graphic novels, and other forms of sequential art. Dr. Whaley’s workshop will make use of a growing collection of African American comic books (those illustrated, written, or published by African American creators and/or featuring black characters and cultural content) housed in JMU Libraries’ Special Collections.

Her visit is co-sponsored by the Visiting Scholars Program, the Special Collections Speaker Series, the Africana Literatures and Cultures Workshop, the Africana Studies Program, and the IDEA Grant Committee.
