Getting Started with AI

Explore the complex and ever-changing world of artificial intelligence (AI) in this workshop. Gain a thorough understanding of AI, from its origins to its current impact across various industries. Learn about the different types of AI, with a focus on generative AI (gAI), and explore how machine learning powers AI. This session will cover ethical considerations, showcase various AI tools, and explore AI's practical integration into tools used at JMU, such as Copilot. This will give you hands-on experience with real-world AI applications, including those at JMU.

This workshop, ideal for AI newcomers or early adopters, features informative lectures, interactive discussions, and a showcase of AI tools to ensure active participation.

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Describe the origins and key milestones in AI development.

  • Explain generative AI (gAI), its techniques, and its impact on content creation.

  • Discuss the ethical implications of AI in areas such as information sourcing, image creation, authorship, and algorithmic bias.

  • Confidently explore generative and non-generative-AI tools.

  • Discuss the implications of AI on higher education practices and future technological developments.
